Why Trust Reigns Above All Other Traits In Leadership

Jon Sholter

Today, in less than 3 minutes, we are going to cover the following: Why trust is the number one trait to move your career forward.

We wrote an article a while ago giving 5 tips for frontline leaders to fast-track their path to leadership positions. If you missed it, you can read it here.

To summarize the five points, they were as follows: ask questions, get things done, think like your owner, become a beacon of trust, and invest in yourself. It goes without saying that there are more than five traits and skills that make a great leader. However, I believe the ones written about would put you head and shoulders above your competition.

5 tips make for a great article and a catchy clickbait title, but if you could only choose one to focus on right now, what would it be?

Unreasonable Hospitality

If you can start with nothing else, I would start with "Become a Beacon of Trust."

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much." Luke 16:10

This quote/verse above is at the core of every Leader's decision to promote and hire. Can I trust this person? Is there any reason I cannot trust this person? Do I feel like I trust this person?

The implications of such questions are more dire the higher the leadership position. Chances are, you will only get a top leadership position if you are trustworthy and if you somehow dupe someone into giving you one, you will not sustain.

When we are hiring leaders for our hotels, what are we really asking?

Can I trust this person to manage our cash? Can I trust this person to complete a task I assign them? Can I trust this person to put the hotel's interest first? Can I trust this person to be a good steward of our business? Can I trust this person to give their 100%? Can I trust this person is on our team? Can I trust that this person is honest when I ask them a question?

When trust is present, other "skills" can be taught, and other behaviours can be coached.

If trust is not present, the house of cards will inevitably crumble.

Anyone who has been around for some time knows the feeling. The feeling a colleague is not telling you the truth. The feeling when someone tells you one thing and tells someone else another; Or perhaps the realization when petty theft turns into major theft. The realization when minor deceit turns into a toxic team.

If you want to become a strong leader, be trustworthy. If you want a strong team, hire trustworthy people and eliminate those who aren't.

Only after this fundamental foundation is built can you focus on having an elite team by coaching, mentoring, and building these beacons of trust up.
